Linguist and activist Noam Chomsky was denied entry to Israel and the West Bank on Sunday, seemingly due to his criticism of Israeli policies. But who knows? It could just be that the IDF doesn’t believe in generative grammar. [Haaretz] More »

Hating Jews for being Jews is actually more appalling be it a Jew or Gentile doing the hating moreso than calling someone a self-hating Jew. Inciting Palestinians to kill Jews out of this hate is even more appalling. Worst of all is the killing itself because of this hate. I fail to find the courage in reporting on a people hell bent on killing Jews for being Jews. I think that’s the appalling part.The name calling that happens to be true, eh, that’s not the bad part. So if Noam is inciting violence with his hateful rhetoric, perhaps he should not be allowed to let in the country he is hoping to destroy. Crazy how militant those Israelis are.

@Cam/ron: yeah you’re probably right because he BLEW THEIR MINDS!
Gallant
Chomsky is a congenially soporific peddler of conspiracy theories.
If you dressed Glenn Beck up as Mr. Rogers, you’d have something resembling Noam.

@Awesome X: Glen Beck, Palin, et al rant. Don’t you think you are being unkind and off the mark about your chosen verb?

@oudemia: Thank you for promoting my comment!

@skahammer: You are hearted. I organised a series of talks at a Law school a number of years ago and had to escort him to the lecture room. He was such a delight: droll sense of humour, friendly and non-full of himself. I love him to bits.

If my career were dedicated to linguistics, I too would constantly rant about politics and foreign policy.

@CrayonSmoothie: I have college classmates who attended his lecture on semantics at Berkeley – they were on life support by the end.

@GlasgowRose: Is that a shot at @Cunning_Linguist?

Obviously this is appalling and the commitment of Noam Chomsky to the human rights of all those who are oppressed and abused in the world is unquestionable. But I want to single out what an amazingly courageous journalist Amira Hass is. She and her journalistic compatriots write more courageously and with such clarity about the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people than any other journalist outside Israel and they do it in the face of an onslaught of appalling accusations of being self-hating jews.

What works best of all is the marketplace of ideas. Is Israel going to be a western democracy, or not?

@Gadzodilo: The Onion didn’t preface “linguist” with “cunning”? Admirable restraint.

I think this little bit of the article is worth quoting:
In a telephone interview with Channel 10, Chomsky said the interrogators had told him he had written things that the Israeli government did not like. “I suggested [the interrogator try to] find any government in the world that likes anything I say,” he said.

The Israeli government is afraid Chomsky will kill a large portion of the population by boring them to death. The fear is justified.
